It’s grey outside, the temperature is likely in single digits AND Melbourne wind gods are pushing you back to bed- welcome to winter. Often your mood and motivation can start to spiral downward during this time of year. The days are shorter and getting yourself to the gym can become a massive challenge. Research indicates that lack of exercise can have a significant negative impact on our mental health. I would imagine most can relate to how a good sweaty training session impacts our energy level, mood, and stress levels. Exercise releases neurotransmitters crucial for our happiness and brain function.
So, needless to say book in some CrossFit classes, schedule a hike or try something new!
Here are some extra tips to get you through winter:
- Vitamin D Supplement: Your body can naturally synthesize Vit D with sunlight + cholesterol. However, it is nearly impossible to get enough sunshine during winter. Vitamin D supplementation may play a role in improving your mood and overall wellness.
- Lean Proteins: Winter can make us crave breads and sugary comfort foods which (in excess) may have a negative impact on our mood. Lean proteins make you feel full and energized to beat the temptation to be lazy.
- Spend Time Outside: Yes, it might be chilly but according to Stanford University walking outdoors can improve brain function and focus. So get off a few tram stops early or take a stroll on your lunch break.
